When you Fall Get Back Up!

Embracing Strength and Balance: A Journey of Mind and Body

At the end of May, on the eve of my 49th birthday, I found myself facing an unexpected challenge. While at the gym, I injured my back attempting a 110-pound trap bar deadlift. My twenty-year-old spirit, still very much alive within my 49-year-old body, believed it could conquer anything. I often remind my body there’s nothing it cannot do, but at the gym, my youthful spirit takes the reins, refusing to yield. My coach keeps me grounded with a firm “No” whenever I ask to push beyond my limits. Despite this, the gym transforms me. I become tough, fearless, and energized. My animal spirit emerges, and I feel more ‘badass’ than ever before.

My strength training coach deserves immense credit for this transformation. Discovering this studio in my hometown was nothing short of a godsend. It had become a sanctuary for my physical well-being and a place where I’ve found a community of beautiful women who have become dear friends. The camaraderie and support from these women have been invaluable. We share not just workout routines but also our life stories, dreams, and challenges. It’s a place where I feel seen and empowered, a stark contrast to the isolation I sometimes feel in other areas of my life.

However, the past two months have tested my resolve. Suffering from a herniated disc has been debilitating for someone like me who never stops. I’ve had to put everything on hold—from my weekly runway training class to turning down summer runway shows. These activities are not just hobbies; they are integral parts of my identity and sources of immense joy and fulfillment. While these might be considered first-world problems, my injury has been a significant setbacks for me, affecting my mental and emotional well-being.

To address my back issues, I’ve relied on chiropractic care, daily (often hourly) stretching, and avoiding prolonged sitting. These adjustments are not easy, but they are necessary. I’m learning to listen to my body more attentively and respect its limits. Gradually, I’m starting to feel better, but it’s a very slow process. The nerve pain that shoots down my leg is beginning to subside with the help of swimming and physical therapy.

This experience has been a profound wake-up call. It reminded me that we are not invincible and that nurturing our bodies is as crucial as caring for our minds. Recently, I’ve been immersed in Joe Dispenza’s book, “Becoming Supernatural,” which explores the power of the mind to overcome setbacks, illnesses, and create new neural pathways. Dispenza’s teachings have profoundly influenced my healing journey. He explains that by tapping into the potential of our minds, we can initiate significant changes in our physical health and overall well-being.

Joe Dispenza’s book delves into the science of how our thoughts and feelings shape our reality. His research on neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections—has shown that we can rewire our brains by changing our thoughts and habits. This concept has been a game-changer for me. By focusing on positive affirmations and visualizing a pain-free, healthy body, I’ve started to see real improvements in my condition.

Through this journey, I’ve learned the importance of balance, patience, and the incredible strength of both body and mind. This experience has reinforced that while our bodies may age, our spirits remain ageless and powerful. It’s a continuous journey of growth and learning, and I’m grateful for the lessons along the way. I’ve also realized the importance of having a support system, whether it’s my coach, my friends at the gym, or my family. Their encouragement and understanding have been crucial in my healing process.

As frustrated as the healing has been, I see it as a blessing in disguise. It’s teaching me to slow down, appreciate the small victories, and be kinder to myself. I’m learning that it’s okay to ask for help and that taking a break does not mean giving up. Instead, it’s an opportunity to come back stronger and more resilient. As I continue my recovery journey, I am excited about the future and the new possibilities that lie ahead.
